Dramma giocoso in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Two couples in different constellations, driven by a bet on alleged and real infidelity, are at the centre of Mozart’s »Così fan tutte« (»All Women Do It«), which bears the succinct subtitle »La scuola degli amanti« (»The School of Lovers«). Librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte’s witty text inspired Mozart, an accomplished operatic composer, to write music which matched his humour with profound reflection.
After »Le nozze di Figaro« and »Don Giovanni«, Mozart and Da Ponte collaborated for a third time on »Così fan tutte« in 1789/90. First the Viennese court poet Da Ponte came up with a subject of his own invention. Then Mozart provided numerous starting points for the original arrangement of arias, duets, trios and other ensemble movements, right up to the two great finali. In this finely structured chamber play, a new level of Mozart’s already astonishing skill in characterization through music is revealed in a multitude of diverse moments of expression. Morality and its absence are addressed, not only in philosophical discourse, but primarily in the actions of true-to-life characters, who walk a tightrope between truth and deception. The young French director Vincent Huguet and Daniel Barenboim will kick off the new Da Ponte cycle at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden with this production of Mozart’s last Italian comic opera.
