Symphony Concert: Schubert, Mahler
Thu, 24. June 2021, 20:00

Gustav Mahler's „Das Lied von der Erde“

Gustav Mahler did not live to witness the world premiere of his symphonic lieder cycle entitled »The Song of the Earth« – a circumstance that gave his musical rendition of Chinese poetry in translation a testamentary air. This applies above all to the final segment, »Farewell«, with its underlying laconic melancholy. Donald Runnicles places his conducting of the »Song« and the soloist vocals of Annika Schlicht and Brian Jagde alongside another opus postumum: Franz Schubert’s »Unfinished Symphony«, which received its premiere in 1865, a full 37 years after the death of its composer.
