Founded in 1742 by Frederick the Great and built by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, the Unter den Linden State Opera has been one of the most artistically groundbreaking venues for more than 260 years – unsurpassed in its rich tradition. Many consider it to be the most beautiful opera house in the world. Renowned personalities such as Gaspare Spontini, Giacomo Meyerbeer, Richard Strauss, Erich Kleiber, Otto Klemperer, Wilhelm Furtwängler and – since 1992 – Daniel Barenboim have shaped this institution.

What is most important to the artistic work of the Unter den Linden State Opera is the ambition to present traditional opera works at an extraordinarily high musical level and, at the same time, promote discourse on the operatic genre by staging world premieres as well as innovative and experimental productions.

Since summer 2010, the venue Unter den Linden is undergoing extensive redevelopment. For this reason, the new venue of the Staatsoper for the next seasons is now being found in Berlin-Charlottenburg in the Schiller Theater. In summer 2010, the whole ensemble together with Artistic Director and General Manager, Jürgen Flimm moved to the Schiller Theater on Bismarckstraße. There, the season 2010/2011 was opened with a world premiere on October 3, 2010.
