Derived from the French ‘opera comique’, the name ‘Komische Oper’ indicates modern musical theatre, in which music and plot are treated with equal attention. This is why, since the opening of the Komische Oper Berlin in 1947, all performances have been given in German. The repertoire emphasizes works of Mozart and Händel, along with works of Slavic repertoire, and works from the 20th century. Directors such as Konwitschny, Neuenfels, Bieito, Decker, and Kosky have influenced the style of the Komische Oper Berlin. Since the beginning of the 2004 - 2005 season, Andreas Homoki is head director and artistic director of the opera. The general music director is Carl St. Clair.
