Award of the Götz Friedrich Prize

Friederike Blum receives the Götz Friedrich Prize 2023
The Götz Friedrich Prize for the 2022/2023 season goes to Friederike Blum for her production of the opera TRI SESTRY by Peter Eötvös at Theater Hagen. Chaired by the artistic director of Deutsche Oper Berlin, Dietmar Schwarz, the jury voted unanimously to award the prize of 5000 euros. A studio prize was not awarded. The award ceremony will take place on 17 October 2023 in the Tischlerei of the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
Dietmar Schwarz: "As an instrument for promoting young directors in the opera field, the Götz Friedrich Prize is now more important than ever. The consequences of the Corona epidemic have led to many productions being postponed or cancelled altogether at the theatres. Young directors, who have had little opportunity to gain experience, have suffered most from this. I am all the more pleased that in awarding the prize to Friederike Blum, not only has an outstanding work been honoured, but also the courage of a theatre to entrust such an elaborate and central position for the repertoire to a young director."
For more than twenty years, the Götz Friedrich Prize has been one of the most important institutions for the promotion of outstanding talent in the field of music theatre direction - prize winners such as Stefan Herheim, Nadja Loschky and Sebastian Baumgarten may be mentioned here as representatives. After being organised by the German-speaking Opera Conference in recent years, the Götz Friedrich Prize has returned to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the main venue of its dedicatee, for the 2022/2023 season. Members of the jury are Viktor Schoner (Stuttgart State Opera), Ina Karr (Lucerne Theatre), Andrea Moses (Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar), Jörg Königsdorf (Deutsche Oper Berlin) and Martin G. Berger (director). The Götz Friedrich Prize is financially supported by the Förderkreis der Deutschen Oper Berlin.
