Warning: this is a plush- and- ornate- décor-free zone: On September 24, 1961 the Opernhaus that had been inaugurated in 1912 and destroyed during the War was reopened as Deutsche Oper Berlin. Ever since it has been Berlin´s largest and Germany´s second largest music theatre, featuring among the most modern institutions in Europe. The straightforward and elegant building that was realized by architect Fritz Bornemann (he also conceived the America Memorial Library and the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, a. o.) seats 1.865 and guarantees a maximum viewing and hearing experience for every visitor.

From its beginnings, the opera house in Bismarckstraße was designed for the production of the major works of the 19th and early 20th century - Wagner, Verdi, Puccini, Strauss and many others. Soloists of international repute, famous directors and conductors and an excellent ensemble made up of singers, chorus and musicians have established the Deutsche Oper Berlin as one of the great opera houses of the world. 112 world premieres in almost a century have enshrined its reputation as a venue for the showcasing of new works. Important principal conductors have included Bruno Walter in the 1920s, Lorin Maazel in the 1960s and Christian Thielemann in the 1990s. As Intendant and Director, Götz Friedrich, a student of the legendary director Walter Felsenstein, was highly influential during his spell at the Deutsche Oper Berlin between 1981 and 2000, and his presence continues to be felt to this day.

New personalities for a new chapter: Since the beginning of the 2006/7 season, director Kirsten Harms, in her capacity as Intendant, has been in charge of the artistic programme and responsible for a root-and-branch 'changing of the guard'. New Musical Director in the Bismarckstraße since August 2009 has been the Wagner and Strauss expert Donald Runnicles. The Deutsche Oper has a carefully nurtured repertoire of approximately 70 opera productions, each bearing the individual stamp of their respective directors - a repertoire rivalled in Europe only by Vienna and Munich. In presiding over new productions, Kirsten Harms favours topicality and a fresh aesthetic and gives rein to young directors and maestros of theatre direction. Great works of opera for the future: supplementary to the programme, and extending the core repertoire, are rediscovered or banned works from the first half of the 20th century. Artistic refinement and bold innovation have a proud tradition at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
